National Storytelling Week (NSW) 2010

 

The Society for Storytelling (www.SfS.org.uk) promotes storytelling in England and Wales, with a particular focus on National Storytelling Week. A Guide to National Storytelling Week is available - to request a copy please

This year is the 10th National Storytelling Week and runs from the
29th January to the 6th Febuary.

 

Events Planned for Surrey include:

Wednesday 27th January – [Closed event].

Janet Dowling – Serendipity Storytelling workshop with year 6 at Tadworth School.

Friday 29th January – [Closed event].

Tim Ralphs - Serendipity Storytelling workshop with Young Storytellers at Beacon School.

Friday 29th January - Story Telling Circle.

Tim Ralphs tells “The Queen of Claywood Flats” at Three Heads in a Well Storytelling Circle. Information.

Saturday 30th January - Workshop.

Janet Dowling offers a workshop for “The Nuts and Bolts of Beginning Storytelling for Adults”. Information.

Monday 1st February – [Closed Event].

Alex Somerville at St. Paul's Children's Centre, Tongham.
Family Learning storytelling and craft project working with parents/carers and children to develop literacy and communication skills.

Wednesday 3rd February – [Closed event].

Alex Somerville and Janet Dowling – Serendipity Storytelling Project. Concert with Beacon Young  Storytellers and 3 local primary schools.

Wednesday 3rd February.

RhymeTime with Tracey - a storytelling special. FREE baby and toddler session at Guildford House Gallery.

These sessions are held on the first Wednesday of every month and are aimed at under 3's and their carers. The sessions will include music - making, dancing, action songs, object handling, nursery rhymes and storytelling.  The emphasis is on variety and having fun!

Venue:   Guildford House Gallery, 155 High Street, Guildford, GU1 3AJ.
Time: 10.30am to 11.15am
Price : FREE.

NB. Places are free but limited and prebooking is recommended. Due to space limits, it is suggested you bring your child in a fold up pushchair or baby carrier.

Tuesday 2nd February

An evening of Storytelling with Kate Corkery.

Award winning Storyteller tells enchanting stories from her native Ireland.
Location:  Richmond Library
Time:  6.30 to 7.30pm.
Adults welcome

Wednesday 3rd February.

‘The Twelve Swans’ by Hilary Watkins.

Once we spoke the language of animals and plants. Out of such a time comes a story where plants spin magic and destinies.
Location:  Ham Library.
Time:  6.30 to 8pm.
Adults welcome – also suitable for over 12 yrs.

Thursday 4th February.

From the Arabian Nights to Arthurian Adventures’ by June Peters.

Wonder tales from all over the world and a little bit of wisdom learned out and about on London transport too!
Location:  Teddington Library
Time:  6.30 to 7.30pm.
Adults welcome.

Saturday 6th February.

‘The Ancestors Footsteps’ by Hilary Watkins.

Ancient tales and songs from this isle, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Location:  Twickenham Library
Time:  3.00 to 4.30pm
Adults welcome – also suitable for over 12 yrs

During National Storytelling Week 2009, we held  5 events in Surrey (we had planned more - but  they got snowed off!) - including storytelling concerts and workshops for adults and children, and working with schools with the Bourne Hall Museum, Ewell, Surrey.

Other storytelling events were held around Surrey by other organisations.

Nationally - over a 1000 events were held in such diverse places as:

  • The Admiral’s House Greenwich.
  • The Salvation Army.
  • Prisons.
  • The RAF Museum Hendon.
  • Croxteth Hall and Country Park Liverpool.
  • The National Railway Museum in York.
  • Museum of Childhood Bethnal Green.
  • North Tyneside Disability Forum.
  • Museum of London.
  • Waterstones Book Shops.
